Howe
Teague was one of the masters of Ozarks square dance fiddling.
He wore many hats: radio DJ, recording artist, highway department
crew member, a link to the older generations of dance fiddlers,
and an influence on a younger generation of fiddlers over the years.
This recording was made in his home in Salem, Missouri a few months
before his passing in the summer of 2005.
Arkansas
Traveler
Jim Orchard lives in Eminence and is a long-time player
in the bluegrass circuit in the Missouri Ozarks. This recording
was made in the back room of Weaver's Pickin' Parlor in Willow Springs,
where Jim often plays and is master of ceremonies. His second is
Larry Dethridge, Willow Springs, also a staple of the Ozarks bluegrass
scene. The tune is one that Jim wrote and named after a local landscape
in Shannon County.
McHenry Holler
Johnnie
Lou Mayhan resides in Shannon County. Her singing and songwriting
was/is highly influenced by her experiences in church and the country
recordings she grew up with. Johnnie Lou has had a family music
group for many years. She and her son Seaman Don and his wife perform
regularly at Shannon County church functions. This recording was
made in her home.
Come A Little Closer To the Lord
Van
Colbert hails from Willow Springs, Missouri. Van plays a unique
"two-finger" roll style that he learned from the family.
"Mom and Dad instilled in us the love of their music,
and to this day we play, sing and remember," he says.
On this recording Van Colbert is playing with Gerald Gregory. The
recording was made at Weaver's Pickin' Parlor in Willow Springs.
